Stadler Flirt EMU

Stadler FLIRT

FLIRT is the abbreviation of “fast light innovative regional train”. It was developed for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) where it entered service in 2004.

In Germany 3 and 4 car configurations are used for regional transit. The picture shows a FLIRT EMU in the livery of the Hessian private-sector operator cantus.

The driver’s desk of FLIRT is fitted with various control devices from Schaltbau. You can see the master controller, three toggle switch consoles and a timetable holder in the centre of the desk integrated in a large toggle switch console.

Master controller

The S334 C from Schaltbau is a versatile handy master controller and brake controller especially designed for multiple unit trains. It is avail­able with rotary encoder, potentiometer or camshaft con­trol­ler.
Optionally, a momentary-action switch can be integrated in the operating handle for an additional function, such as dead man’s handle or horn.

This is a detail shot of a console fitted with F Series toggle swtiches from Schaltbau for the intermittent automatic train running control.

The toggle switches come as 3 or 5 position contact assemblies.

The BFH Series timetable holder from Schaltbau is integrated in a console equipped with P Series toggle switches.

Mounting of the timetable holder is easy, because it fits in the same panel cutout as used for the P Series toggle switch.

A S860 Series keylock switch from Schaltbau is behind the start-up switch of the driver’s desk.

Beside the entrance door of the driver’s cabin there is a Schaltbau S860 Series keylock switch for the service personnel.

Unauthorized access is thus denied during cleaning, maintenance or repair work.

Automatic door control

Schaltbau S826 Series snap-action switches are used for automatic door control.

Since this is a safety related appli­cation, snap-action switches with positive opnening are the first choice. They ensure that the contacts will open even if they have become welded together due to a short-circuit.

The entrance vestibules of the low-floor EMU are equipped with Schaltbau NBS40 Series emergency brake handles for use of the passengers in case of emergency.
