Schaltbau connectors – technical features

Connectors connect components, devices and systems. They establish a low-resistance electrical contact and, in contrast to fixed connections, they can be frequently disconnected and reconnected. This requirement also makes connectors susceptible. Connectors have to do more than just connect, they also have to insulate electrical cables from one another – and do so at high voltages as well as under electromagnetic influences.

Connectors from Schaltbau are designed for use under difficult conditions, particularly where human life depends on reliable technology, such as in railway technology or shipbuilding, below ground or offshore, in environmental technology or the foodstuffs industry. Designed especially for each application and built with great attention to workmanship, our connectors hold up under extreme climatic and technical conditions:

Mechanical stress

Fibreglass-reinforced polyamide housings or metal housings protect the connectors from mechanical forces and shocks. The railway connectors are all drop-tested.

Connectors are designed for a long mechanical service life. Those of the NF series, for example, are designed to withstand at least 5,000 mating cycles. The plug contacts are lathed from solid stock and the spring-loaded contact system of the NF and DN series ensures that signals connect even under conditions of shock and vibration. Most of the connectors are keyed to help prevent mismating.

Bayonet connections, screw connections or additional locking mechanisms secure the connector. All connectors in the range can, of course, also be designed with an additional strain relief mechanism.

Cold and heat

Our connectors for industrial applications work within a temperature range from -40 to +100°C. The signal connectors of the NF and DN series even function at temperatures as low as -55°C.

The multi-component plastics used are all highly flame-retardant.

Moisture and chemical influences

Our modular connectors meet the requirements of protection class IP67 and are therefore protected against both dust and high water pressure. The NF and DN series connectors are watertight (IP68, both plugged and unplugged). Our industrial connectors are resistant to acids, caustic solutions and their aggressive vapours. The charging connectors are, of course, all constructed to withstand the effects of contact with battery acid.

The silver- or gold-plated surfaces of the solid contacts offer optimal protection against corrosion.

Electromagnetic influences

The NF and DN Metal series connectors are all well shielded from electromagnetic influences, HF influences and pulse frequencies (shielding effect greater than 70 dB). This makes it possible to transmit information without interference, even at low signal strengths.
