S850 double break contact from
Schaltbau GmbH
Munich, 1.10.2008: The new S850 snap-action switch from Schaltbau offers a reasonably priced alternative to PLC (programmable logic controllers): one out of the two controllers can be replaced by the S850 snap-action switch without any reduction in safety or reliability, since it can control two power circuits. As an extra option, the switch has an additional actuator, which turns it into a double make contact at the same time. The double break contact can be used in any situation where particularly high demands are made in terms of the reliability and safety of systems and components, such as train doors, points controls, cranes and lifts. For further information, see www.schaltbau-gmbh.com.
The S850 creates a redundant system. This is possible since galvanically separated and mechanically linked contact bridges prevent the faulty power connection between two switching circuits. This means that two power circuits can be controlled that are on different electrical levels. These two switching circuits are opened synchronously, with a time difference of max. 3 milliseconds. The crucial factor for the development of the double break contact was the new standard DIN EN ISO 13849, which is described in a new European Union machinery directive. To meet the requirements of the standard, a redundant system must be created. To date, Schaltbau's range of products only included two-way switches with one break contact and one make contact each. The new snap-action switch therefore offers a reasonably priced yet safe, reliable alternative to expensive PLC systems. In addition, it is certified according to IEC 60947-5-1.
Features of the S850 snap-action switch
Self-cleaning contacts guarantee excellent reliability even with low loads and 5 million switching operations demonstrate the long mechanical working life. Protection against foreign bodies is ensured by the IP40 protection category. The switches are available in a gold or silver version. The gold contacts are particularly suitable for switching smaller currents and voltages, and gold is also corrosion-resistant. The silver contacts are used in the medium load range. The switches can be used at temperatures from -55°C to +85°C. The double break contact has a positive opening mechanism which allows opening, within the requirements of the standard, even after a short-circuit (fail-safe principle). This means that the switch is particularly suitable for safety applications.
