Increased amperage – added safety – improved design

LV – the new generation of charging connectors

Munich. To outperform the requirements of the applicable standard EN1175 – with this formula for success Schaltbau GmbH fulfils the wishes which have been frequently expressed so far, especially by manufacturers and users of electric materials handling vehicles and battery chargers. The new LV80, LV160 and LV320 Series charging connectors are specifically designed for the gentle charging of batteries with and without the option of a commercial electrolyte circulation system.  The connector series are named after the nominal load according to the type specification but exceed it by far – the LV160 Series, for example, up to 250 A. The modular design and intermateability with all commercial connector systems – even with option for electrolyte circulation systems – are further typical features of this connector innovation.

The new LV Series represent a further development of the LB and LB-L charging connector series which will be replaced by them in the medium term. Their most important features are being technically challenged by the LV series: First and foremost there is the increased current carrying capacity of the connector’s main contacts. This is due to the innovative design of its socket contacts which is a technological novelty in this branch of engineering. An increased contact area allows for 30 to 40 per cent higher amperage, reduced heating of contacts, low contact resistance and continued operation as well as high contact forces that do not deteriorate over time, and less wear and tear when mating and unmating. The contact design also prevents the louvers from getting damaged during cabling, assembling or transporting the connector.

The design and material of the plug and receptacle shells gives the connector its rigidity and resistance to the stresses of shock, vibration and temperature. In addition to that, the connector features a reliable interlocking which allows easy joining and separating of the connector halves even under harsh environmental conditions.

The housing material used is a new thermoplastic that is highly resistant to acid and suitable for operation with temperatures ranging from –40°C to +110°C (and +170°C for a short time). This exceeds the usual temperature range of –25°C to +90°C. The thermoplastic is self-extinguishing in accordance with UL 94-V0. All component parts of the connector housing including handle and strain relief clamp are resistant to sulphuric acid of high concentration – exceeding the requirement of standard EN1175-1 of 1.1 g/cm³ up to tested 1.34 g/cm³.  The colour of the handle is black, but there is, of course, the option of a red handle for emergency cutout.

The modular design of the connector not only allows the insertion of the main contacts for different wire sections, but also the integration of two pilot and/or auxiliary contacts as well as the air tube adapter for electrolyte circulation. Coloured keying plugs for voltage keying – yellow for the vehicle battery, grey for wet-cell, and green for dry-cell batteries and battery chargers – prevent mismating of connector halves or cross-mating with a wrong charging voltage.

Approvals: DIN 43589-1 (dimensions), EN 1175-1 (tests exceeding the requirements of the standard), UL (application and operation). Schaltbau is the rightful owner of the patent for an air blow-in system integrated in the plug shell of the charging connector.
