S870 - a model of reliability and design life

Safety has top priority

Munich. Where people risk their lives while being on duty in the face of danger, safety is most important. For a malfunction caused due to a faulty component can, in the worst case, have fatal consequences. So, being extravagant in the formulation of safety standards is more than justified. It may happen that the critical link in the safety chain turns out to be a modest electro-mechanical component: the snap switch. Only if the switch works properly, even in the most adverse conditions, the safety of the whole system can be relied on.

Schaltbau S870 Series snap-action switches are especially designed for applications, where the highest demands of reliability, breaking capacity and service life are to be met. Design characteristics are the wiping, self-cleaning contacts and the positive opening operation as developed by Schaltbau that ensures a forced opening of the normally closed contact even in the case of contact welding due to overload currents or a short-circuit, or in the event of a failure of the snap-action mechanism due to a broken spring. This is what makes the S870 ideally suited for use in safety circuits.  And safety becomes visible when using this switch. Since its green transparent housing allows for looking inside and easy inspection of the contacts.

The most characteristic feature of the switch is its snap mechanism, which, by means of a pretensioned spring, provides high repeat accuracy of the switching operation within a precisely defined range at an extremely rapid speed that is essentially independent of the speed of actuator travel. It also has the effect that the arc generated by switching gets extinguished much more quickly. So, for applications requiring slow actuator speed the S870 is the switch of choice. Its rapid transit time remains uninfluenced even by changes of the operating temperature as resulting from a change of load.  The S870 Series is further characterised by a high resistance to shock (70 g) and vibration (50 g), by up to 530 operating cycles per minute and a design life of more than 10 million cycles of operation.

The switch owes its long service life not least to the following design characteristics: When making or breaking contact the mobile contact bridge slides against the fixed contacts of the switch. This wiping action results in the self-cleaning of the contacts. It keeps them free of contamination and keeps contact resistance at a constant low level over the whole lifetime of the switch.  Sealed to IP67, it is this protection against ingress of water, dust, and harmful substances, which adds to the high reliability of the switch even in handling low currents and voltages. The S870 is, therefore, ideally suited for use in all safety-related applications requiring a conventional thermal current up to 10 A as well as for use in telecommunications and automation. Thanks to its compact design and the various special design options, there is hardly an application demanding a high-quality snap-action switch, where the S870 would not fit, since it meets all requirements of the applicable standards such as DIN, VDE, EN, IEC, and UL. Typically used as limit switch or safety switch in control units, you will find the S870, for instance, in materials handling vehicles, stairlifts and domestic appliances.

S870 Series switches are available with screw-type terminals (featuring a captive screw) and special protection against contact, with quick-connect or PCB terminals, but also assembled with leads or a cable. Operated by a standard pushbutton, the switch can also be ordered with auxiliary actuators such as flat levers, roller levers, and simulated roller levers of various lengths and sizes.
